“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6 (ESV)

This verse makes me think of the Israelites standing at the edge of the Red Sea. Pharaoh’s army was closing in behind them, mountains surrounded them, and the sea blocked the way forward. There was no strategy left, no escape route, and no solution they could create for themselves. The Red Sea didn’t part until there was nowhere left to run. Again and again throughout Scripture, God meets His people at the end of themselves and shows them that what is impossible for man is possible with Him.

Many people hear John 14:6 as a verse of limitation because Jesus says there is only one way to the Father. While that’s true, I think we sometimes miss the incredible hope in what Jesus is saying. For all of human history, sin had separated mankind from God. No amount of effort, sacrifice, wisdom, or good works could bridge that gap. Then Jesus steps onto the scene and announces, “I am the way.” Not “I know the way” or “I’ll show you the way,” but “I am the way.” The disciples would soon watch Him go to the cross, and what looked like the end would become the very means by which God opened the way back to Himself. Jesus, was pointing out that when before there wasnt a way, now there is a way, though Him.

Whatever challenge you are facing this week, remember that our God is a God who makes a way where there seems to be no way at all. May your week be without fear. May your heart trust the One who opened the way to the Father. And may you walk in confidence, knowing that when you cannot see the path ahead, God has already provided the way through Jesus Christ.
