“And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:7 (ESV)
If you’ve ever played a guitar string, you know that when one note is played, other notes can be heard within it. They aren’t different songs, they’re harmonics, echoes of the same note appearing at different levels. The note you hear first is called the fundamental, but hidden within it are other frequencies that give the sound richness and depth. One note can carry far more than first meets the ear.
When John wrote Revelation, Jesus’ promise, “I am coming soon,” was first heard by real churches facing persecution, pressure, and suffering. Christians were being tempted to compromise, discouraged by hardship, and wondering how long they could endure. To them, Christ’s words were a reminder to remain faithful because the King had not forgotten them.
But that promise didn’t stop with those first churches. It continued to echo through every generation that followed. It encouraged believers during wars, plagues, persecution, and countless moments when God’s people wondered if He was still at work. The same promise reaches us today: “Don’t quit yet. I’m coming.”
And one day, the final harmonic will sound. Christ will return, every promise will be fulfilled, every wrong will be made right, and faith will become sight. Revelation is less like a newspaper predicting one future event and more like a bell rung in the first century whose sound continues to echo through every generation until Christ finally returns.
May your week be filled with hope as you listen carefully to the promises of Jesus. May your ears hear not only the words He spoke long ago, but the echoes of His faithfulness in your life today. And may you hold fast, knowing that the King who promised to come is still coming.
